Graduate Education

Since the end of the Cold War, the level of complexity in international relations has grown tremendously. Relations between nations no longer focuses only upon security concerns, but also upon issues of international economics, the environment, refugees and immigration, and a series of other significant issues that remain at the center of foreign affairs and U.S. foreign policy. As a result, there is an increasingly level of importance, and demand, for professionals and scholars who understand this plethora of issues. A comprehensive understanding of any or a combination of these issues allows one to be more effective in articulating America's interests abroad, as well as improving the general human condition around the world. Moreover, employers from various fields of international relations, the federal government to NGO's to international corporations , suggest, if not require, a degree beyond the undergraduate level as a precondition to a successful career in any field.

In response to the demand, universities around the country have established professional schools or master degree programs that encompass a broad field of international issues, but also explore them in depth that an undergraduate liberal arts program cannot always accommodate. Graduate education does not have to stop or start with a master's degree in international relations. Combinations of professional programs, whether law or business, for example, or in the field of science and technology, can be created with relative ease at most schools to meet the unique interests of the student.

The following is a small selection of professional schools and graduate programs that offer degrees in international relations or the practice of foreign policy. Contact admissions offers at the respective schools or e-mail us at colead@afsa.org for further information.
