Why We Need Your Help

Unlike many hot button domestic issues in the news every evening, American foreign aid gets relatively little attention both in the media and in Washington. Politicians frequently tackle issues such as gay marriage and flag burning bans with much more tenacity than they do with bills pertaining to foreign aid. In the post September 11th world, the most important goal for U.S. foreign policy is to ensure the security of America.

Although military strength is an integral part of ensuring a secure America for the future, all of our foreign policy goals cannot be met solely using military power. The United States won the Cold War ultimately because we won the war of ideas, and not in a battlefield. Public diplomacy and engagement abroad are integral parts to guarantee America's security.

However, as a fraction of the total budget, funding for U.S. foreign affairs programs barely rounds up to one percent. Each year, the appropriations process sees foreign affairs programs funded at well below the levels requested by the State Department and other agencies. For American diplomacy to be successful, proper funding is needed to ensure that these programs can expand and continue to work.

Ultimately, Congress will not give attention to this problem unless Americans are informed about the issue. Please utilize the sections of this web site to learn how to inform others, contact your representatives and senators, and to help support America's international engagement.

How You Can Help Make A Difference

The best way that you can help is to keep informed about international developments and foreign affairs issues. The only way that politicians will respond to the ongoing crises is if there is persistent pressure from those who vote them into office. Check our web site for frequent updates, and use the links to the left for information on how to contact your elected officials.
