America is undergoing significant debate over what role, if any, the nation should play in world affairs after the Cold War and post 9/11/01. Powerful and vocal U.S. political and opinion leaders increasingly call for isolationism. Many citizens are not well informed about world affairs. This approach endangers our national security and prosperity, and the interests of the American people.
COLEAD promotes new ways for the foreign affairs community to work together. Our members share a deep concern about the increasing lack of public interest, awareness, and understanding of international affairs. We believe that progressively this lack of understanding will have serious negative consequences for the United States at home and abroad. COLEAD works to overcome ignorance about international issues at the local and national levels, and promotes educational programs.
This web page provides basic information about important foreign affairs issues, why engagement abroad is important to the U.S., how you can help to strengthen U.S. commitment to foreign affairs programs, and how to get additional information.
One of the most important actions that American citizens can take to support America's role in the world is to advocate for adequate funding for U.S. international programs. Such funding remains at extremely low levels for the responsibilities that America has as the only global power and in keeping with the goals and values of our society. America can't be effective unless it works with other nations and international organizations to promote justice, build peace, safeguard democracy, expand our exchanges and cultural programs, protect our environment, promote human rights, and fight poverty. You can do all of these by supporting COLEAD and its member groups. Click on "Capitol Hill" for updates on activities in Washington and on the Hill and go to "Write Congress" for how you too can have a voice in support for American engagement in world affairs. You can also join us as an "Associate" and get regular e-mail up-dates.
If you are a Foreign Affairs Nongovernmental Organization you can participate in and help strengthen the voice of our community by becoming a full member of our association.
